Frankfurt Airport has taken a monumental step forward in passenger convenience and security, implementing facial recognition technology across all its terminals.
Powered by IT giant SITA and tech integrator NEC, this innovative biometric system enables passengers to breeze through check-in, security, and boarding – all with a simple facial scan. Originally tested by Lufthansa, this technology is a part of the broader initiative to ensure a seamless airport journey for every traveler.
Passengers looking to take advantage of this service can register via the Star Alliance biometric app or directly at check-in kiosks if they possess biometrics-enabled passports. The process is swift, taking just a few seconds, after which passengers can enjoy a document-free journey through the airport.
Over 12,000 passengers have already utilized this technology at various airport checkpoints, showcasing its efficacy and user-friendliness. Additionally, the 2023 Global Passenger Survey by IATA indicates a growing acceptance of biometric solutions in airports, with 46% of travelers using biometrics in the last year, up from 34% in 2022.
While convenience is a significant advantage, data protection remains a top concern for travelers. However, the survey reveals that 40% of travelers would be more receptive to biometric solutions if assured of the security of their personal information, indicating a positive trend towards embracing this technology.
Pierre Dominique Prumm, Fraport’s Executive Director of Aviation and Infrastructure, has expressed his enthusiasm, stating that Frankfurt is the first European airport to offer a completely contactless journey using biometrics. The goal moving forward is to equip at least 50% of all check-in kiosks and gates with this advanced technology in the coming months.
